Registered Political Parties File Election Expenses Returns
and Receive Reimbursements

OTTAWA, Monday, July 31, 2006 — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, announced today the election expenses reimbursements that registered parties are entitled to receive following the January 23, 2006, general election, based on the financial returns now submitted by the parties.

Section 429 of the Canada Elections Act requires that each registered political party file an election expenses return within six months after polling day. The following registered political parties filed an election expenses return on or before the filing deadline: Bloc Québécois, Canadian Action Party, Communist Party of Canada, Conservative Party of Canada, Green Party of Canada, Liberal Party of Canada, Libertarian Party of Canada, Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada, New Democratic Party, and Progressive Canadian Party. The following registered parties have requested and been granted an extension to the filing deadline:

In accordance with section 435 of the Act, a registered party must receive either two percent of the valid votes cast nationally at the election or five percent of the valid votes cast in the electoral district(s) in which it endorsed a candidate to be eligible for an election expenses reimbursement.

The Chief Electoral Officer authorizes reimbursement of 50 percent of the eligible registered party's election expenses, paid by its registered agents, upon receipt of the party's election expenses return, the auditor's report and a declaration by the party's chief agent concerning the election expenses.

The following amounts have been reimbursed:
