THE CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER OF CANADA RECEIVES
THE NOTICE OF VACANCY FOR WINDSOR WEST
IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

(OTTAWA, February 4, 2002) — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, received on January 17, 2002, the official warrant from the Speaker of the House of Commons indicating that the seat for Windsor West (Ontario) is vacant. After receiving a warrant, at least 11 days and no more than 180 days must pass before a by-election is called, in accordance with subsection 31(1) of the Parliament of Canada Act.

In Windsor West, the by-election polling day could be held as soon as March 11, 2002. Afterwards, the returning officer has seven days to complete the validation of the results unless an adjournment is required. The returning officer indicates the date chosen for the validation of the results in the Notice of Election. To allow time for any request from a candidate for a recount, there is then an additional delay of seven days before the returning officer returns the writ of election, unless a judicial recount is necessary.
