ELECTION EXPENSES OF CANDIDATES AND POLITICAL PARTIES
(OTTAWA, March 28, 2002) — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, today highlighted the fact that the election period for the five by-elections to be held on May 13, 2002 started on March 27, 2002.
This means that all election expenses used during the by-election period which began March 27, 2002, are subject to the limit on election expenses.
Election expenses include property and services used directly to promote or oppose a candidate, a registered party or party leader during the by-election period.
Spending limits for candidates will be released on or before April 3, 2002. Spending limits for registered political parties will be released following the confirmation of candidate nominations, that is, no later than April 24, 2002.
