Deadline Approaches to Register to Vote by Mail or at a
Local Elections Canada Office by Special Ballot

Gatineau, Friday, November 7, 2014

  • Canadian electors have until Tuesday, November 11, to register to vote by special ballot (by mail or in person at a local Elections Canada office) in the Whitby-Oshawa (Ontario) and Yellowhead (Alberta) federal by-elections on November 17, 2014.
  • Electors can download the Application for Registration and Special Ballot form at elections.ca. They can also request it in person, by mail, by telephone or by fax from Elections Canada.
  • Electors' completed applications must reach Elections Canada in Ottawa by 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Tuesday, November 11. Those applying in person at a local Elections Canada office have until 6:00 p.m. (local time) to submit their application.
  • Once an elector has registered to vote by mail or in person by special ballot, he or she may not vote at the regular or advance polls.

"The fastest way to register is to do it in person at the local Elections Canada office where the by-election is being held," says Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand. "That way, the elector gets a special ballot voting kit immediately and can either vote by mail or right there in the local Elections Canada office."

Elections Canada is an independent body set up by Parliament.
