- Public Hearings on the Redistribution of Electoral Districts

- Event Description:
- The process to redistribute federal electoral districts (or 'ridings') has begun. Under the Constitution of Canada, every 10 years (after the census) federal electoral districts must be reviewed to reflect changes and movements in Canada's population. The process will be led primarily by independent commissions working separately in each province to establish electoral boundaries. While Elections Canada gives administrative and technical support to the commissions, it does not have any say in what the commissions decide about the electoral map of their province. - Elections Canada set up a dedicated working group, made up of national student associations, that will help to build a bridge between Elections Canada and post secondary institutions across Canada. This group will also assist the agency in restoring the Vote on Campus Program for the next general election. It will also address and resolve challenges in setting up this program in a minority government context (where an election could happen at any time) and a pandemic.

- This ad-hoc consultation aimed to address short-term solutions to accessibility concerns related to the List of Candidates in Large Print provided in polling stations in order to make it accessible when the list is long, as would be the case in the Mississauge-Lakeshore by-election of December 2022. The consultation also touched on the braille list of candidates and the braille voting template. This consultation will require a follow up post-by-election to ensure long-term solutions are identified.

- This consultation involves a User Group of blind and partially-sighted Canadians to provide feedback on specific questions and test specific tools. This is a multi-faceted consultation that involves exploring the use of assistive technology for the independent verification of the regular ballot and an accessible low-tech solution to help with voting by special ballot (telephone voting, videoconference voting, or braille ballot kit, TBD).
