When a sale takes place between Elections Canada and a client, applicable sales tax is charged. The following table indicates how sales tax is applied.
|Customer||GST or HST*||PST**|
|Provincial governments||HST only||No|
|Private company or individuals (not exempted)||Yes||Yes|
|Private company or individuals (exempted)||No if exemption number||No if exemption number|
|* HST applies only to Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
** PST is calculated on the amount that includes GST for Quebec and Prince Edward Island. PST is calculated on the amount excluding GST for Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Note that there is no PST for Alberta, NWT, Nunavut and Yukon.
Elections Canada needs the exemption certificate number in order not to charge tax. If a customer claims to be exempt but does not provide Elections Canada with an exemption number, Elections Canada must charge tax. The exemption number must be provided when ordering.
