FILE LAYOUT DESCRIPTION

File Type: EDSum (summary)

Description: This file has one entry for each electoral district for each of the two general elections. It provides electoral district information, such as province, name, ED (electoral district) code, and a summary of the voting results.

Fields:

Field Name Description
Event_Number A four-digit number representing the electoral event. 3600 is the 36th general election, and 3700 is the 37th general election.
ED_Code Electoral district code, in the format EDXX-YYY, where the fixed literal ‘ED’ prevents spreadsheets from trying to convert the code into a date, XX is a code for each province/area, and YYY is a number within that province or area.
ED_English_Name The name of the electoral district, in English.
ED_French_Name The name of the electoral district, in French.
Province_Name_English The name of the province, in English.
Province_Name_French The name of the province, in French.
ED_Rejected_Ballot_Count The number of rejected ballots in this electoral district for this general election.
ED_Valid_Vote_Count The number of valid votes in this electoral district for this general election.
ED_Electors_On_List_Count The number of electors on the voters lists in this electoral district for this general election.
Total_Poll_Count The number of polls in this electoral district for this general election. Includes all poll types.
Advance_Poll_Count The number of advance polls in this electoral district for this general election.
Mobile_Poll_Count The number of mobile polls in this electoral district for this general election.
SVR_Group1_Ballot_Count Special Voting Rules (SVR) Group 1 comprises electors who voted by special ballot and are either Canadian electors temporarily residing outside Canada, Canadian Forces electors or incarcerated electors serving sentences of less than two years.
SVR_Group2_Ballot_Count Special Voting Rules (SVR) Group 2 comprises Canadian citizens residing in Canada who voted by special ballot, within or outside their electoral districts.
SVR_Total_Ballot_Count The total number of special ballots received for this electoral district.
Population_Cnt The population of the electoral district, as recorded during the last census before the general election.
Census_Year The year the census was taken.
Judicial_Recount_Indicator Indicates if a judicial recount was carried out in this electoral district after this general election.
Majority_Count The margin of win – the difference between the number of valid votes for the winning candidate and the number of valid votes for the candidate who came second.
Majority_Percentage The winning percentage – the difference between the percentage of valid votes cast for the winning candidate and the percentage of valid votes cast for the candidate who came second.
Voter_Participation_Percentage The percentage of voter participation, based on the number of votes cast and the number of electors on the lists.
Elected_First_Name The winning candidate’s first name.
Elected_Middle_Name The winning candidate’s middle name.
Elected_Last_Name The winning candidate’s last name.
Elected_Party_English_Name The English name of the party of the winning candidate.
Elected_Party_French_Name The French name of the party of the winning candidate.
Event_English_Name The name of the general election, in English.
Event_French_Name The name of the general election, in French.
Returning_Officer The name of the returning officer for the electoral district at the time of the general election.

File Type: Cand (candidates)

Description: This file provides an entry for each candidate who ran in the 1997 and 2000 general elections. It includes the name of the candidate, the name of the political party, the number and percentage of votes, and other related information.

Fields:

Field Name Description
Event_Number A four-digit number representing the electoral event. 3600 is the 36th general election, and 3700 is the 37th general election.
ED_Code Electoral district code, in the format EDXX-YYY, where the fixed literal ‘ED’ prevents spreadsheets from trying to convert the code into a date, XX is a code for each province/area, and YYY is a number within that province or area.
Ballot_Sequence_Number The list of candidates on the ballot paper is arranged in alphabetical order by surname.This number indicates the placement of the candidate on the ballot for the electoral district. The combination of event number, ED code, and ballot sequence number is unique for each candidate.
Candidate_First_Name The candidate’s first name.
Candidate_Middle_Name The candidate’s middle name.
Candidate_Last_Name The candidate’s last name.
Candidate_Gender_Code The gender of the candidate: ‘M’ for male, ‘F’ for female.
Candidate_Occupation_English The candidate’s occupation, given in English.
Candidate_Occupation_French The candidate’s occupation, given in French.
Elected_Indicator ‘Y’ if candidate was elected, ‘N’ otherwise.
Incumbent_Indicator ‘Y’ if candidate was the incumbent, ‘N’ otherwise.
Candidate_Vote The number of valid votes the candidate obtained.
Candidate_Vote_Percentage The percentage of valid votes the candidate obtained.
Candidate_Residence The place the candidate recorded as his/her residence.
Candidate_Province_English The province of the candidate’s residence, in English.
Candidate_Province_French The province of the candidate’s residence, in French.
Candidate_Party_English_Name The English name of the candidate’s political party.
Candidate_Party_French_Name The French name of the candidate’s political party.

File Type: Polls

Description: This file has an entry for each polling station in each electoral district for the 1997 and 2000 general elections. It provides information on the polling station, including the type of poll, and gives the overall vote counts for the poll.

Fields:

Field Name Description
Event_Number A four-digit number representing the electoral event. 3600 is the 36th general election, and 3700 is the 37th general election.
ED_Code Electoral district code, in the format EDXX-YYY, where the fixed literal ‘ED’ prevents spreadsheets from trying to convert the code into a date, XX is a code for each province/area, and YYY is a number within that province or area.
Poll_Number The number assigned to the polling station. Examples: 3, 601, 45A, 48-3.
Polling_Station_Name A name that generally represents either the location of the polling station or the area where the voters lived.
Poll_Type Indicates the type of polling station, as follows:
10 = ordinary poll, 2A = advance poll, 3S and 4S = SVR polls.
Urban_Rural Indicator Urban/rural indicator (not used in reporting 2000 results).
Void_Indicator Indicates that a polling station was planned for the area, but the returning officer determined there was no need for it.
No_Poll_Indicator Indicates that the returning officer intended to hold this poll, but extreme circumstances prevented it.
Split_Indicator Indicates that this polling division was split into two or more polls, due to the number of electors or location issues.
Merge_Indicator Indicates that this poll was amalgamated (merged or combined) with another poll.
Merged_With_Poll_Number Gives the identification number of the polling station with which this poll was merged.
Advance_Poll_Indicator Indicates if this was an advance polling station.
Mobile_Poll_Indicator Indicates if this was a mobile polling station.
SVR_Poll_Indicator Indicates if this polling station was used for Special Voting Rules (SVR) results, where voting was done by special ballot.
Poll_Rejected_Ballot_Count The number of rejected ballots at this polling station.
Poll_Valid_Vote_Count The number of valid votes at this polling station.
Total_Ballot_Count The total number of ballots counted at this polling station.
Poll_Electors_On_List_Count The number of electors on the voters list for this polling station.

File Type: Results

Description: This file provides an entry for each candidate by polling station in each electoral district for the 1997 and 2000 general elections. It includes information on who the candidate is, the candidate’s political party, and the voting results for that candidate at a particular poll.

Fields:

Field Name Description
Event_Number A four-digit number representing the electoral event. 3600 is the 36th general election, and 3700 is the 37th general election.
ED_Code Electoral district code, in the format EDXX-YYY, where the fixed literal ‘ED’ prevents spreadsheets from trying to convert the code into a date, XX is a code for each province/area, and YYY is a number within that province or area.
Ballot_Sequence_Number The placement of the candidate in the list of candidates on the ballot for the electoral district (candidates are listed in alphabetical order by surname). The combination of event number, ED code, and ballot sequence number is unique for each candidate.
Candidate_First_Name The candidate’s first name.
Candidate_Middle_Name The candidate’s middle name.
