Answers…

How do I find the total contributions received and expenses incurred by a political party?

To get the total contributions and expenses of political parties, per year, you can consult the Summaries of contributions and expenses on the queries page, offering you a choice of different tables with comparative data for the last five years.

How do I find the detailed list of contributions received by a political party?

If you want to search the contributions by class of contribution (individuals, businesses, governments, trade unions and other organizations), click on Search by class and party. If you want the complete list of contributions for a party, or all parties, click on Download the lists of contributions. You will have to save the files in your computer, import them to your spreadsheet or database software, and search or print the information you want from your computer.

How do I find the detailed list of expenses incurred by a political party?

Political parties are not required to submit a detailed list of expenses incurred during the fiscal year. The expenses are, however, broken down into various categories. Click on Summaries of contributions and expenses and choose Table 4 (Nature of expenses of registered political parties) and/or Table 5 (Breakdown of operating expenses of registered political parties).

How do I find the biggest contributions received by each party, or by all parties?

Click on Statistics to obtain the 10 biggest contributors per party, or for all parties.

How do I find a specific contributor, the party to which he/she gave and the amount?

Click on Search by contributor name. Enter the shortest possible word describing the name of the contributor you are seeking (ex.: type "royal" to obtain all entries for the "Royal Bank of Canada"). The name of the contributor could be written in various ways.

How do I import the results obtained into a spreadsheet or database (e.g. MS Excel or MS Access)?

When you are on the results page, click on "View a tab-delimited text version of this report". You can then choose "Save As" from the File menu of your browser and save this text file on your computer. Be sure to give the file a ".txt" extension. You can then import the file to your favorite spreadsheet or database software.

Mac Users: For MS Excel users, when choosing the parameters to import the data to Excel, remember to change your "File origin" to Windows [ANSI].

How do I sort the results differently?

Every results page from the Search by contributor name to the Search by class and party can be sorted as you choose. Just click on the title of the field by which you would like to sort the results (all the field titles are linked) and the database will re-order the data either alphabetically or in descending numerical order.

How do I find the contributions to political parties for 1997?

On the first page of the database (Welcome message), click on the link to Fiscals 1997 at the bottom of the page. The Fiscals 1997 have not yet been included in this database as the electronic format is not yet compliant with the database. You can, however, download a text file of the detailed contributions per party.
