This bar chart presents contributions for all regulated federal political entities by political affiliation from 2000 to 2014.

The registered parties depicted in this graph are the Conservative Party, Liberal Party, NDP, Bloc Québécois, Green Party, Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance, Progressive Conservative (PC) Party and one data set for all other parties, including independent candidates. The X-axis demarks years 2000 to 2014. Contributions for each party are presented as a bar graph on a separate row with separated Y-axis values, with the exception of the Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance and PC parties, which are depicted as stacked bar graphs that start in 2000 and end in 2003.  Contributions to EDAs, leadership contestants and nomination contestants are not reported from 2000 to 2003, because they were not part of the regulatory regime.

The data in this graph shows that from 2000 to 2003, the proportion of contributions received by each registered party and its affiliated entities are as follows: Liberal Party 41%, Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance 23%, NDP 16%, PC 12%, Bloc Québécois 4%, Conservative Party 2% and all other parties (including independent candidates) 1%.

From 2004 to 2014, the Conservative Party received 47% of contributions. In the same time frame, the Liberal Party received 30%, the NDP 15%, the Bloc Québécois 3%, the Green Party 3% and all other parties (including independent candidates) 2%.

On the bottom of the graph there are the following notes:

Party Merger: The PC and Alliance/Reform merged into the Conservative Party on December 7, 2003. As a result, the Conservative Party received contributions in 2003, after the merger.

Bill C-24: Amendments to the Canada Elections Act and the Income Tax Act. Introduced publicly-funded quarterly allowances and contribution limits, brought EDAs, nomination and leadership contests into the regulatory system, increased reimbursements of paid regulatory system, increased reimbursements of paid election expenses and political contribution tax credits.

Bill C-2: The Federal Accountability Act. This legislation further reduced contribution limits and restricted eligibility to individuals only.

From 2000 to 2003, EDAs, nomination contestants and leadership contestants were not part of the regulatory regime. As such, their contributions were unknown. Contributions from 2000 to 2003 are for registered parties and candidates only. After 2003, contributions are for registered parties, candidates, EDAs, nomination contestants and leadership contestants.
