CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER TRANSMITS
FEDERAL ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES COMMISSION
REPORT FOR SASKATCHEWAN

(OTTAWA, Tuesday, December 10, 2002) – The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean-Pierre Kingsley, today announced, in accordance with the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act, he has transmitted to the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Milliken, the federal electoral boundaries commission report for Saskatchewan. The report follows the public hearings that took place in several cities across the province between September 17, 2002 and September 27, 2002.

The Chief Electoral Officer transmits to the Speaker of the House of Commons the report for each of the 10 commissions. Section 21 of the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act provides that the Speaker shall table the report before the House of Commons and refer the report to the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs. The time frames for each step in this process are stipulated in the same statute.

Representation in the House of Commons is readjusted after each decennial (10-year) census to reflect changes and movements in Canada’s population in accordance with the Constitution Act, 1867, and the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act. Independent federal electoral boundaries commissions were established for each province to consider and report on any changes required to the boundaries of the electoral districts.

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Saskatchewan is an independent body which makes all decisions regarding the proposed and the final federal electoral boundaries for the province.

The role of Elections Canada is to provide support services to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission in each province. Elections Canada is the non-partisan agency of Parliament responsible for the conduct of federal elections and referendums.
