Canada's Democracy Week

Apathy is Boring

Democracy Challenge Winners Announced

OTTAWA, Tuesday, March 27, 2012 – The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, and Ilona Dougherty, Executive Director of Apathy is Boring, today announced the 10 winners of "The Art of Democracy" National Youth Challenge.

Elections Canada launched the Challenge in September 2011 in collaboration with Apathy is Boring as part of the first-ever Canada's Democracy Week.

Canadian youth from across the country submitted images, videos, blog posts and tweets to answer the question "What does your democracy mean to you?"

The prizes for best image and video go to 18-year-old Mona Sabzevari of British Columbia. "The Challenge got me thinking about our democracy and how I feel about it," said Ms. Sabzevari. "In submitting my entries, I felt very proud to be Canadian."

"I was pleased to hear that many young people used this opportunity to discuss democracy with their teachers, friends and family," said Mr. Mayrand. "In fact, our recent youth survey showed that political knowledge, interest, civic engagement and political discussions at home are important factors in motivating youth to vote."

"At Apathy is Boring we know young people have important things to say about what democracy means to them, and it was exciting to see so many creative submissions," said Ms. Dougherty.
