Revised Limits for Political Contributions

OTTAWA, Wednesday, December 21, 2011 — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, would like to remind Canadians about political contribution limits that have changed as a result of inflation adjustment.

Contribution limits are adjusted each April 1 based on the formula set out in the Canada Elections Act. Some adjustments will take effect January 1, 2012, while others have been in effect since April 1, 2011:

  • The annual limit for total contributions to a particular registered political party will increase to $1,200 as of January 1, 2012.
  • The annual limit for total contributions to any combination of candidates, nomination contestants and registered electoral district associations of a particular registered party will increase to $1,200 as of January 1, 2012.
  • The limit per election for contributions to each independent candidate in an election commencing between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012 has increased to $1,200.
  • The limit per contest, in total, for contributions to the leadership contestants in a particular leadership contest commencing between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012 has increased to $1,200.

Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible to make political contributions.
