Electors Must Prove Their Identity and Address When They Vote

OTTAWA, Wednesday, March 30, 2011

  • A federal general election is now under way.

  • All electors must meet the voter identification requirements when they vote on election day on May 2, or at the advance polls on April 22, April 23 or April 25.

  • Electors may choose any of three options to prove their identity and address.

  • Some identification documents used at provincial and municipal elections may not meet federal election requirements.

"Most voters will be able to meet the requirements by simply showing just one piece of identification, like a driver's licence, that has their name, photo and address. They will then be able to vote easily," says Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand.
