Transcript of Video on Ineligible Contributions

Now that you understand the limits on political contributions, loans and loan guarantees, let's take a look at contributions that are not permitted by law.

As you know, the authorized agents of political entities are responsible for ensuring that contributions are made in accordance with the rules in the Canada Elections Act.

Let's start by understanding what constitutes an ineligible contribution.

The following contributions are ineligible:

  • a cash contribution over $20
  • a contribution from a corporation, a trade union, an association or a group
  • a contribution that exceeds the limit, and
  • a contribution from an individual who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident

Also, it is illegal for a person to enter into an agreement to sell goods or services to a registered party or a candidate if one of the terms of the agreement is that an individual will make a contribution to a political entity.

In other words, a registered party or candidate cannot agree to buy goods or services from a person in exchange for them making a contribution to a political entity.

Additionally, it is important to note that political contributions cannot be made by any indirect means.

In other words, no individual can make a contribution that comes from the money, property or services of another person or entity.
