New Legislation

The following legislation affecting federal elections has been enacted in fiscal year 2020-2021.

C-30 Budget Implementation Act, 2021, No 1 Royal Assent received June 29, 2021 Amends paragraphs 486(3)(c) and 486(4)(a) of the Canada Elections Act to related to false statements to affect election results.

The following bills proposing changes to electoral legislation were before Parliament.

C-19 An Act to Amend the Canada Elections Act (COVID-19 Response) Committee Reporting the Bill with Amendments in the House of Commons (2021-06-21) The bill would temporarily amend the Canada Elections Act to assist in the delivery of a safe and secure election during the COVID-19 pandemic. These amendments include:
  • Replacing polling day with a three-day polling period;
  • Greater flexibility regarding the delivery of in-person polling in long-term care facilities;
  • Broadening the scope of the Chief Electoral Officer's power to adapt the Canada Elections Act; and
  • Facilitating the application and voting process for special ballot voting.

S-206 An Act to change the name of the electoral district of Châteauguay—Lacolle Introduction and First Reading in the Senate (2020-09-30) Would change the name of the electoral district of Châteauguay—Lacolle.
S-209 An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act and the Regulation Adapting the Canada Elections Act for the Purposes of a Referendum (voting age) Second Reading in the Senate (2021-06-22) Would lower voting age from 18 to 16.
C-240 An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (voting age) Introduction and First Reading in the House of Commons (2020-03-12) Would lower voting age from 18 to 16.
C-241 An Act to amend the Parliament of Canada Act (change of political affiliation) Introduction and First Reading in the House of Commons (2020-03-12) Would amend the Parliament of Canada Act to deem a seat vacant and require a by-election when a member changes party affiliation.
C-279 An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (voting age) Introduction and First Reading in the House of Commons (2021-03-24) Would lower voting age from 18 to 16.
C-309 An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act (Indigenous languages) Introduction and First Reading in the House of Commons (2021-06-14) Would permit that ballots be available in Indigenous languages in prescribed electoral districts.
