Highlights of the Calendar

The graphic is a timeline called "Highlights of the Calendar." It shows the steps of the redistribution process, as well as roles and responsibilities of different participants, from 2011 to 2013.

In spring 2011, the decennial census was held. In December 2011, Elections Canada was responsible for the allocation of seats. In early 2012, the Governor in Council established the commissions and they received the census return. Just before and during summer 2012, commissions published their proposals. During the summer and into fall 2012, commissions held public hearings. In late 2012 and into 2013, commissions published their initial reports. This coincided in part with a parliamentary recess. In early 2013, the House of Commons began its parliamentary review, which continued until late spring 2013. By early spring 2013, commissions had begun publishing their amended reports. This step was completed in September 2013. Finally, on October 1, 2013, the Governor in Council proclaimed the representation order.
