| * After the polls close on election night, the special ballots cast by
electors residing in Canada and sent to Elections Canada in Ottawa are to be counted,
and each returning officer is to be informed of the results of that count for his or her
district. However, a transmission failure resulted in the omission of these results from
the validation of the vote in seventy-seven districts. The omission was detected
during the preparation of the official results. By law, votes that have not been validated cannot be
added once the returning officer has completed the validation of results.
Table 15 presents the total results that were not validated as a consequence of this omission, broken down by electoral district and political party. The results would not have changed the election outcome in any district, nor would they have affected any registered party’s or any candidate’s eligibility for reimbursement or allowance. The amount of allowances paid to registered parties would have been marginally altered. In none of the seventy-seven districts affected was there a judicial recount or a contestation of the election. The omitted results would have had no impact on the application of the recount provisions of the Act for those districts. |
