David Smith

The Honourable David Smith served in the Senate of Canada from 2002 until his retirement in 2016. He represented Don Valley East in the House of Commons from February 1980 to September 1984, where he was a member of Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau's Cabinet as Minister of Small Business and Tourism. He was also a member of both Toronto City Council and Metropolitan Toronto Council prior to his election as a Member of Parliament.

Shortly after his appointment to the Senate, David was named Chairman Emeritus of Dentons Canada LLP, the law firm where he had previously served as Chairman from January 1994 to September 2002. He became Counsel to the firm when he withdrew as a partner. Today, David maintains an office at Dentons' Toronto location, and is quite active in both recruiting and dialoguing with articling students on his municipal and parliamentary experiences.

David has also served on the boards of numerous corporations (including two banks) and charitable organizations.
