Self-training workbook: Information Officer
Ready to vote
Most electors arrive at the polling place 'ready to vote':
- They have ID that the DRO will accept as proof
- They have a voter card that shows a poll at the polling place
- The voter card also means they are registered to vote
The information officer at the door of the voting room asks each elector whether they have their voter card and a piece of ID showing their name. It's a quick and simple 'yes/no' question. The information officer does not usually check that the ID is acceptable because it takes time and the DRO will do it anyway. The information officer does check the poll number on the voter card. An elector who has a voter card and ID showing their name is almost certainly ready to vote.
If the elector has ID showing their name and the voter card the information officer sends them to the poll written on the card.

Activity
All other electors are sent to the registration desk, where the registration officer has all the tools needed to find their polling station and to work out whether anything else needs to be done before the elector can vote. Some extra procedures are completed at the registration desk, others are completed at the polling station.
Remember, information officers don't usually check that ID is acceptable. However, electors might ask for your help, so it's important that you know what ID is acceptable. In this activity you'll practice both situations – the question of where to direct the elector and the question about what ID is acceptable.
Each of the following pages shows the documents that an elector brings to the polling place. Below those documents there are some simple questions. Use your guidebook and the Have your ID ready to vote Sheet in this workbook to answer the questions.
Remember: The voter card can be used as a piece of ID under option 2.
